    Rome, ItalyAbout Rome

Rome is the capital of Italy and a special comune which also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. It is the fourth-most populous city in the European Union, and it lies on the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, along the banks of the Tiber. Interestingly, Rome is the only existing example of a country within a city, since the Vatican is an independent country inside its boundaries.

The history of Rome dates back to more than 2,500 year time. There is a legend about the founding of the city of Rome. It was common for Romans back in the day to explain their earliest history in terms of legends and myths. The most famous one is the legend of Romulus and Remus, which you might have heard of. According to the story, they were twins and they were suckled by a she-wolf. After deciding to build a city Romulus killed his brother Remus in an argument, so the city took his name.

Rome was built on the seven hills, meaning that it the hills Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline, Caelian, Aventine and Palatine surround the old community. Since 1972 the city has been divided into administrative areas, called municipi and this was done in an attempt to decentralize the city. Each area is governed by a president and a council consisted of 25 members which residents elect every five years.

Rome has a Mediterranean climate where winters are cool and humid and summers are warm and dry. The coldest month is January and the warmest months are July and August. For more information about the weather in Rome, check out this link
