    About Munich

Munich OktoberfestMunich, or as it is called in German: München, is the capital city of the German state of Bavaria. It is located on the banks of River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps and it represents the third largest and the most populated city in Germany (around 1.5 million people). It is believed that its name is derived from the old German term Munichen, meaning “by the monks”.  It is probably related to the  Benedictine order monks who ran a monastery at the place that later became the Old Town of Munich, and the year 1158 is considered the foundation date according to the first discovered mentioning in the data. Munich is divided into 25 boroughs or Stadtbezirke since the 1992 when the administrative reform took place.

This city combines historic and modern architecture since some of the buildings destructed in the war had to be rebuilt. Famous landmarks in Munich are:

    • Deutsches Museum
    • Marienplatz
    • Peterskirche
    • Frauenkirche
    • Maximilianeum
